MARIPOSA
CHAMBER ENSEMBLE // SAXOPHONE ENSEMBLE // c.22-24' // DIFFICULTY - MED-HARD // 2024
PROGRAM NOTE:
Mariposa explores the complex dynamics within a jazz big band, examining themes of power, artistry, and human connection through seven interconnected movements. The narrative unfolds in the wake of a sudden departure – the ensemble's previous lead alto saxophonist having severed ties with their demanding bandleader under contentious circumstances. Into this charged atmosphere steps a young woman as the new lead alto, whose presence creates ripples within the hierarchy of the group. As the piece progresses, what begins as the conductor's professional interest in her protégé transforms into an increasingly complex relationship, blurring the lines between mentorship, obsession, and desire.
The work's structure alternates between major movements and intimate interludes, each revealing deeper layers of the ensemble's internal tensions. Through this format, Mariposa examines the delicate balance between authority and vulnerability, artistic passion and personal boundaries.
The title Mariposa bears two meanings – in Spanish, it means "butterfly," while also referring to a delicate flowering plant known for its striking blooms. Both meanings resonate deeply within the work: the butterfly suggesting transformation and vulnerability, while the flower embodies themes of blossoming talent and ephemeral beauty. Together, these images frame a narrative about artistic flowering, metamorphosis, and the sometimes destructive nature of attraction to beauty and potential.
